Datasets
"Datasets," 2023, video projection, holographic scrim, 5 minutes 4 seconds: is a media installation that exhibits photographic data from 3D models. As part of the research and to collect textures that inform her ceramic sculptures and installations, Shapiro uses photogrammetry to archive these marine environments digitally. This is a scientific method that uses photography to map and measure distances between objects.
Shapiro often collaborates with scientists to experiment with art's possibility to inspire change, inviting the public to participate in her processes and cultivate environmental stewardship. She combines technology with craft, incorporating new tools with traditional methods to produce public art projects that connect people with the environment. With "Datasets," Shapiro imagines how we may use technology to archive, educate and digitally preserve marine ecosystems vulnerable to climate change.
